EDM’s Flagship Festival

#UltraMiamiMainStage documents Ultra Music Festival’s evolution (1999-present) into EDM’s premier showcase, with its Miami Main Stage becoming the industry’s most prestigious booking—career-defining sets streamed to millions globally.

History & Growth

Founded by Russell Faibisch and Alex Omes (1999) as single-day electronic music event in Miami Beach. Expanded to:

  • 2-day (2000)
  • 3-day (2007)
  • Bayfront Park (2001-2019, 2022-present): Downtown Miami waterfront
  • Virginia Key (2019): Disastrous one-year relocation
  • 165,000 attendance (2018 peak)

Main Stage Legacy

Ultra’s Main Stage became EDM’s most iconic:

  • Production: Largest LED screens, pyrotechnics, CO2 cannons in EDM
  • Livestream: YouTube livestream (2013-present) millions of concurrent viewers
  • Career moments: Swedish House Mafia reunion (2018), Avicii farewell (2016), deadmau5 Cube 2.1 (2014)

Headlining Ultra Main Stage closing Sunday = peak EDM success.

Legendary Sets

Swedish House Mafia Reunion (March 25, 2018):

  • First performance since 2013 “final” show
  • Surprise announcement weeks before
  • 200,000+ in-person/livestream viewers
  • Festival ticket prices surged
  • Kickstarted reunion tour, new music

Avicii Farewell (March 2016):

  • Last major festival performance before retirement
  • Emotional goodbye to fans
  • Died 2018 (2 years later)
  • Set became memorial tribute

deadmau5 Cube 2.1 (2014):

  • Debut of custom LED cube stage production
  • Technical marvel (synchronizedVisuals + music)
  • Influenced festival production standards

Tiësto (2010-2015):

  • Annual Main Stage closer (tradition)
  • Hour-long sets defining “festival progressive house”

Resistance Stage & Expansion

Ultra added Resistance stage (2015):

  • Techno/house focus: Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Tale of Us
  • Megastructure: Warehouse-style stage design
  • Underground alternative: Counterpoint to Main Stage commercialism

Carl Cox’s “Carl Cox & Friends” became Resistance centerpiece (2015-2019).

Virginia Key Disaster (2019)

Ultra moved to Virginia Key (2019) after Bayfront Park conflicts:

  • Transportation chaos: Single bridge access, hour+ wait times
  • Sound bleed: Stages too close, audio interference
  • Incomplete production: Rushed setup, safety issues
  • Backlash: Attendees demanded refunds, negative reviews

Festival banned from Virginia Key after one year, returned to Bayfront Park (2022).

COVID & Return

2020 cancelled (COVID-19 pandemic). Returned 2022 (Bayfront Park) to massive crowds, celebrating 22nd anniversary (though 24th edition).

2023-present continues annual Miami Music Week tradition.

Cultural Impact

  • Miami Music Week: Ultra anchors week-long EDM industry conference/parties
  • Career validator: Main Stage closing Sunday = industry peak
  • Production standards: Raised bar for festival stage design
  • Global brand: Ultra expands to 20+ countries (Brazil, Korea, Japan, South Africa)
  • Livestream pioneer: YouTube livestreams democratized festival access
