Documenting life in converted vans as full-time nomadic homes. Instagram account @vanlifediaries (founded 2014) became the movement’s visual epicenter.
Origins
Foster Huntington started #VanLife in 2011 after quitting his fashion job to live in a VW van. His Instagram grew to 1 million+ followers by 2015.
The Van Build Economy
DIY conversion culture spawned YouTube channels, how-to guides, and businesses:
- Conversion kits ($5,000-$20,000)
- Solar panel installers
- Custom cabinetry builders
- Van meetups and rallies
Reality vs Instagram
Romanticized content showed sunsets and mountain views but hid challenges: parking tickets, bathroom logistics, winter cold, and legal gray areas (sleeping in vehicles often illegal).
COVID Acceleration
Remote work + apartment lease escapes made vanlife explode (2020-2021). Used van prices tripled. Sprinter vans became status symbols.
