Vorfreude (literally “pre-joy” or “before-joy”) is German word describing pleasurable anticipation of future events, recognizing that looking forward to something often brings as much happiness as the event itself.

The Anticipation Philosophy

Vorfreude combines “vor” (before) + “Freude” (joy), capturing specific emotion of joyfully anticipating upcoming positive experiences: planning vacations, counting down to concerts, or looking forward to reunions. Research supports vorfreude’s psychological value—anticipation extends happiness beyond event duration, potentially providing more total joy than brief actual experience. German language’s precision in naming this emotion validated its importance, while English speakers lacked single word capturing concept beyond clunky “looking forward to.”

The Psychological Research

Happiness researchers studying positive psychology embraced vorfreude as example of emotion deserving cultivation. Studies showed people often experienced more happiness anticipating vacations than during them (stress, exhaustion, disappointment) or remembering them (selective memory). This suggested deliberately creating anticipation opportunities—planning future events, savoring upcoming experiences, extending joy through imagination—could increase overall life satisfaction more efficiently than constantly seeking new experiences.

The Social Media Counter-Culture

Vorfreude offered counterpoint to social media’s instant gratification culture and FOMO (fear of missing out). Instead of consuming experiences immediately and moving to next, vorfreude encouraged sitting with anticipation, planning deliberately, and appreciating future’s open possibilities. However, commercialization threatened authentic vorfreude: companies selling “experiences” often emphasized capturing/posting over enjoying, while subscription models (monthly boxes, surprise deliveries) manufactured anticipation as marketing tactic rather than genuine emotional experience.
