Waltz

Also known as: VienneseWaltzWeddingWaltzFirstDance

Classic ballroom dance in 3/4 time that remains the most popular wedding first dance choice and a cornerstone of dance competition culture.

Styles

Slow Waltz (International Standard): Elegant rise and fall, sweeping movements, ~30 bars per minute. Iconic: “At Last” by Etta James.

Viennese Waltz: Faster tempo (~60 bpm), continuous rotating turns, “The Blue Danube” by Strauss. More challenging, more dramatic.

American Waltz: Allows for open position, underarm turns, more freedom than rigid International style.

Wedding Culture

Why it dominates:

  • Romantic, timeless, non-controversial
  • Easy to learn basics (box step)
  • Works with most music (Ed Sheeran “Thinking Out Loud”, John Legend “All of Me”)
  • Parents/grandparents approve

2010s evolution: YouTube “surprise choreography” videos (flash mob energy), couple goals content, Arthur Murray/Fred Astaire studios marketing

Competition & Media

  • DWTS staple: Often week 1 or finale, judges’ scores high for technique
  • Strictly Come Dancing: Ballroom vs Latin divide, waltz as technical showcase
  • Blackpool Dance Festival: World championship, live-streamed 2015+

Cultural Staying Power

Despite modern dance trends, waltz persists because:

  • Disney Princess association (Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast)
  • Formal events (debutante balls, military balls)
  • Nostalgia for “old-fashioned” romance
