The Hashtag
#Wanderlust became Instagram’s defining travel hashtag, representing the millennial desire to explore the world over settling down—a lifestyle aspiration more than a vacation.
Origins
The German word “Wanderlust” (wander + lust, meaning a strong desire to travel) existed for centuries, but exploded on Instagram around 2011-2012 as the platform became travel’s primary showcase.
Early adopters used it to share exotic destinations, mountain peaks, and beach sunsets. By 2015, it had over 50 million posts. By 2020, it exceeded 150 million, making it one of Instagram’s most-used hashtags.
Cultural Impact
The hashtag represented:
- Millennial prioritization of experiences over possessions
- The rise of travel as identity and status symbol
- Instagram’s transformation of travel photography
- “Collect moments, not things” philosophy
- Digital nomad culture and location-independent work
Critics pointed to:
- Performative travel (going places for Instagram, not experience)
- Environmental impact of constant flying
- Privileged assumption that wandering is accessible to all
- Gentrification of “undiscovered” destinations
- The exhaustion of constant travel
By 2020, COVID-19 shut down wanderlust temporarily. The hashtag evolved to include local exploration and “armchair travel.” Post-pandemic, it resurged with “revenge travel” energy but also more consciousness about overtourism and sustainability.
