What Is Wojak?
Wojak (Polish for “soldier”) is a simple line-drawn character representing various emotional states and archetypes. The original depicts a bald man with a melancholic expression, used to convey sadness, resignation, or despair.
Origins & Evolution
Wojak first appeared on Polish imageboard Vichan in 2009, then migrated to 4chan’s /r9k/ board around 2010 as “Feels Guy” — a reaction image for expressing emotions. Early usage paired Wojak with the phrase “I know that feel bro.”
The character exploded in complexity around 2018, spawning hundreds of variants: Doomer (depressed millennial), Bloomer (optimistic counterpart), Coomer (porn-addicted), Zoomer (Gen Z), NPC (mindless conformist), and countless others representing specific internet subcultures.
Cultural Impact
Wojak became a universal template for expressing identity, stereotypes, and social commentary. Political memes, financial memes (especially crypto), and lifestyle commentary all adopted Wojak variants.
By 2020-2024, Wojak was one of the internet’s most versatile meme formats — simultaneously used earnestly and ironically across ideological lines.
