The Simple Face That Spawned a Thousand Archetypes

Wojak (Polish for “soldier”) is a simple MS Paint drawing of a bald man with a sad expression, created around 2010. By 2018-2019, the internet had evolved Wojak into dozens of character archetypes—Doomer, Bloomer, Coomer, Boomer—each representing distinct personality types, lifestyles, or worldviews.

Original Wojak (2010-2017)

The original “Feels Guy” Wojak appeared on Vichan (Polish imageboard) around 2010, expressing melancholy and loneliness. It spread to 4chan, where “I know that feel bro” became the accompanying phrase. For years, Wojak remained a simple sad face for expressing relatable disappointment.

The Wojak Cinematic Universe (2018-2020)

In 2018, 4chan’s /r9k/ board began creating Wojak variations representing different personality types:

Key Archetypes:

Doomer (2018): Depressed young man in beanie, smoking cigarette, black hoodie. Represents nihilism, climate anxiety, economic despair, dating hopelessness. Soundtrack: doomer music playlists, synthwave.

Bloomer (2018): Optimistic counterpart, exercising, sunny, believing in self-improvement despite everything.

Coomer (2019): Porn-addicted, desensitized, hollow-eyed. Internet addiction personified.

Boomer (Wojak variant) (2018): Not actual baby boomers, but personality type—“30-year-old boomer” who drinks Monster, mows lawn, says “back in my day.”

Zoomer (2019): Gen Z counterpart, TikTok-pilled, chronically online, flooded with memes.

Yes Chad / Nordic Gamer (2019): Buff, confident opposite of Wojak. Often paired with Wojak as “virgin vs. chad” dynamic.

Tradwife (2019): Female Wojak in traditional dress, representing trad culture debates.

Cultural Analysis & Controversy

Wojak variations became a language for discussing personality types, generational differences, and cultural phenomena. But they also became recruitment tools—far-right communities used “tradwife” and certain Wojak types to promote reactionary gender politics.

The archetypes crystallized internet subcultures into recognizable characters. “You’re such a doomer” became shorthand for nihilistic mindset. “Bloomer energy” meant optimism despite circumstances.

Evolution (2020-2023)

Wojak variations continued proliferating:

  • Specific professions: “Wagie” (wage slave), “NEET” (unemployed)
  • Investment types: “Crypto wojak,” “stonks wojak”
  • Political affiliations: Dozens of political compass wojaks
  • Relationship types: “Femcel,” “incel,” relationship dynamics

By 2023, the Wojak universe had hundreds of variations, each representing micro-identities and internet subcultures. It demonstrated how simple art could evolve into complex cultural taxonomy.
