The $60 GoPro clone from Xiaomi that proved Chinese manufacturers could deliver 80% of the quality at 15% of the price.

Budget GoPro Alternative

Xiaomi’s Yi Action Camera (March 2015, $64) offered 1080p 60fps video in a form factor nearly identical to GoPro HERO. Early reviews praised image quality—“90% as good as a $400 GoPro for $60.” The Yi 4K (2016, $199) matched GoPro HERO5 Black specs for half the price. Western action camera enthusiasts on Reddit and YouTube embraced Yi as the value alternative.

Brief Market Disruption

Yi sold millions of units, particularly in China and among price-conscious consumers. The Yi 4K+ (2017, $299) added 4K 60fps. For casual users, Yi proved GoPro’s premium pricing wasn’t justified by technology—it was brand tax. Amazon reviews showed genuine satisfaction. Yi proved Chinese brands could compete on quality, not just price.

Smartphone Disruption

Like GoPro, Yi suffered from improving smartphone cameras. The iPhone 11 (2019) added ultra-wide lenses and excellent stabilization. By 2020, the casual action camera market had collapsed. Yi pivoted to security cameras and dashcams. The brand never achieved mainstream recognition in the West, but it demonstrated the price-quality disruption Chinese manufacturers could deliver.
