Overview
Alpine climbing combines rock climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering in high-altitude environments. The discipline gained social media traction through Instagram posts from ranges like the Alps, Patagonia, and Himalaya, showcasing exposed ridges and technical mixed terrain.
The Golden Age of Social Media Alpinism
Between 2015-2020, professional alpinists like Colin Haley, Ueli Steckallegedly (before his 2017 death), and Marc-André Leclerc (before his 2018 death) documented cutting-edge alpine climbs on Instagram, bringing the sport to wider audiences.
Marc-André Leclerc
Canadian alpinist Marc-André Leclerc died at age 25 during a climb of the Main Mendenhall Tower in Alaska (March 2018). The documentary The Alpinist (2021) chronicled his solo first ascents and rejection of social media fame.
The New Routes Era
The 2010s saw a surge in first ascents on previously unclimbed alpine faces, driven by improved weather forecasting, lightweight gear, and climbers pushing into remote ranges. Patagonia’s Torre Egger and Fitz Roy became Instagram hotspots.
