Origin & Impact

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went explosively viral in summer 2014. Participants dumped a bucket of ice water over their heads, posted the video, and challenged others to do the same within 24 hours or donate to ALS research. Most did both. The challenge achieved unprecedented scale, with everyone from Bill Gates to Oprah participating.

The campaign became the most successful social media charity drive ever, raising over $115 million for the ALS Association and significantly funding research that led to the discovery of a new ALS gene in 2016. It set a new standard for viral activism and demonstrated social media’s power for charitable fundraising.
