The viral outcry over record Amazon rainforest fires that blamed Bolsonaro’s environmental policies and spotlighted deforestation.

Fire Crisis

In August 2019, satellite data showed 80% increase in Amazon fires compared to 2018—over 40,000 fires. Photos of smoke-darkened São Paulo at 3 PM went viral. Scientists blamed illegal land-clearing by farmers and ranchers, emboldened by President Jair Bolsonaro’s anti-environmental rhetoric. The “lungs of the Earth” were burning.

Global Attention

#PrayForAmazonia trended globally. Celebrities (Leonardo DiCaprio, Madonna, Cristiano Ronaldo) posted—often with incorrect images from years prior. Macron called the fires an “international crisis.” Bolsonaro blamed NGOs without evidence, then attacked Macron. Brazil rejected G7 $20 million aid offer. International tensions escalated over sovereignty versus global environmental responsibility.

Deforestation Context

The fires highlighted Bolsonaro’s systematic environmental policy: defunding enforcement, firing scientists, encouraging agribusiness expansion. Deforestation increased 30% in 2019. Indigenous lands were invaded by illegal loggers and miners. By 2022, deforestation reached 15-year highs. The 2019 fires raised awareness but failed to stop Brazil’s environmental backslide until Bolsonaro’s 2022 election defeat.
