The Program
America’s Potluck is deliberately unstructured. There is no central venue, no headline performer, no ticketed component. State commissions distributed hosting kits — printable cards, conversation prompts, sample invitations — and asked neighbors, families, and community groups to convene a potluck at whatever scale worked for them. Origin
The program grew out of America250 Utah, one of the more active state-level Semiquincentennial commissions, which developed the potluck concept as its signature Utahn contribution to the anniversary. It fit the state’s civic-institution DNA — Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ward-house culture is built around shared meals — and the format proved portable. The national America250 organization, coordinating the broader anniversary programming, picked up the idea and asked every state and territory to adopt it. By spring 2026, all 50 state commissions plus Puerto Rico had signed on.
