What It Means
The word breaks down as semi- (half) + quincentennial (500-year anniversary): half of 500 is 250. American writers have argued for years about whether it should be sestercentennial (Latin for 2½ centuries) or bicenquinquagenary instead — the more marketable America250 branding has won out in public usage, but the government’s formal name remains “United States Semiquincentennial Commission.”
Origin
Congress created the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission in 2016 during the Obama administration, modelled on the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission that had run the 1976 celebrations. The commission spent years planning grants to states, capital projects, and a national programming framework. In January 2025 the incoming Trump administration created a parallel executive-branch body — the White House Task Force on Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday, branded “Freedom 250” — and redirected significant federal resources to it, generating some tension over which entity was actually running the party.
