Overview
Ashima Shiraishi became the youngest person (age 13) to climb a V15 boulder problem when she completed “Horizon” in South Africa in March 2014. Her prodigy status made her the face of youth climbing and indoor competition culture.
Child Prodigy Era
Shiraishi started climbing at age 6 in Central Park, quickly becoming a gym legend. By age 10, she was climbing 5.14a routes. By 14, she’d climbed multiple V15s and 5.15a routes, achievements that would define most professional climbers’ careers.
Competition Career
She won the Youth Bouldering World Championship (2013), but transitioned away from competition climbing in her late teens to focus on outdoor climbing. Her decision sparked discussions about burnout in youth sports.
Media Presence
Shiraishi appeared in documentaries, commercials, and climbing films. She was featured in The New Yorker (2014) and became the youngest athlete with a signature climbing shoe (Evolv Shaman).
