Travis Scott’s Astroworld (August 3, 2018) was one of the decade’s most acclaimed rap albums, blending psychedelic production, Houston influences, and star-studded features into a cohesive sonic world. It debuted at #1 and spawned the chart-topping “SICKO MODE.”
The Concept
Named after Houston’s defunct Six Flags Astroworld theme park, the album was a nostalgic trip through Travis’s childhood memories filtered through psychedelic trap. The album art featured an inflatable Travis head entrance — an image that became iconic.
Production
Mike Dean, Tay Keith, Hit-Boy, and others crafted dense, layered beats. Samples ranged from Tame Impala to Big Hawk. The album felt like a theme park ride — thrilling, overwhelming, and carefully constructed.
Star Features
Drake, Kid Cudi, Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, James Blake, and Stevie Wonder appeared. Each feature felt purposeful rather than gratuitous. Kid Cudi’s “STOP TRYING TO BE GOD” was a psychedelic highlight.
Astroworld Festival Tragedy
Travis launched an annual Astroworld Festival in Houston (2018-2021). The 2021 festival resulted in 10 deaths from crowd crush, overshadowing the album’s legacy and raising questions about Travis’s responsibility.
