Lionel Messi’s tearful departure from Barcelona in August 2021 ended the greatest player-club relationship in football history. After 21 years and 35 trophies with Barcelona, Messi left due to the club’s financial crisis and La Liga’s salary cap restrictions—a devastating end to an era.

The Shock

On August 5, 2021, Barcelona announced Messi would not re-sign despite both parties reaching an agreement. The club’s financial crisis (€1.35 billion debt) and La Liga’s strict salary cap rules made it impossible to register Messi’s new contract, even after he agreed to a 50% pay cut.

Messi had become a free agent on June 30 after his contract expired. He wanted to stay. Barcelona wanted him to stay. But financial Fair Play regulations blocked it. President Joan Laporta blamed La Liga and the previous administration’s mismanagement.

The Press Conference

August 8, 2021, Camp Nou. Messi held a press conference, breaking down in tears before speaking. His family cried in the front row. He couldn’t compose himself for minutes.

“I wasn’t prepared for this,” Messi said through tears. “Last year I wasn’t prepared. This year I was. I thought we had everything agreed. We couldn’t do it because of the club’s situation and La Liga’s rules.”

He confirmed PSG was “a possibility” but hadn’t made a final decision. Days later, he signed a 2-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain, joining Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.

Messi’s Barcelona Legacy

21 Years (2001-2021):

  • 672 goals (all-time club record)
  • 305 assists
  • 35 trophies: 10 La Liga, 7 Copa del Rey, 4 Champions League, 3 FIFA Club World Cup
  • 6 Ballon d’Or awards while at Barcelona (7 total)
  • 474 goals in La Liga (all-time record)
  • 91 goals in calendar year 2012 (all-time record)

PSG Struggles

Messi’s two seasons at PSG (2021-2023) were disappointing. He scored 21 goals in 53 appearances but struggled to adapt. PSG won Ligue 1 twice but failed in the Champions League (Round of 16 both years).

Fans booed him at times. The chemistry with Neymar and Mbappé never clicked. Messi looked uncomfortable, homesick. He left PSG after his contract expired in 2023.

Inter Miami & World Cup Redemption

Instead of returning to Barcelona or joining Saudi Arabia’s mega-offer, Messi chose Inter Miami (MLS) in July 2023. He immediately dominated, winning Leagues Cup and creating MLS mania. His arrival doubled MLS viewership overnight.

Between leaving Barcelona and joining Miami, Messi won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina (see separate entry), completing his legacy. The one trophy that eluded him was finally his.

Barcelona’s Decline

Without Messi, Barcelona struggled. They finished second in La Liga 2021-22, won it in 2022-23, but were eliminated early in Champions League both years. Financial issues forced sales of future revenue. The post-Messi era has been painful.

Legacy

Messi’s Barcelona exit felt like divorce. The club he joined at age 13, where he became the greatest player ever, couldn’t afford to keep him. It symbolized Barcelona’s fall from grace—mismanagement, debt, and hubris leading to losing their icon.

Messi will forever be synonymous with Barcelona. His No. 10 jersey retired in spirit (though not officially). The Camp Nou statue of him remains. He’s simply the greatest Barcelona player ever, and his exit was the saddest moment in club history.
