Black Trans Lives Matter
#BlackTransLivesMatter centers the experiences of Black transgender people — particularly Black trans women — who face disproportionate violence at the intersection of racism and transphobia. The hashtag surged in summer 2020 amid Black Lives Matter protests and a crisis-level wave of murders targeting Black trans women.
Intersectional Crisis
Black transgender women experience compounded marginalization:
- 2020: At least 44 transgender people murdered (mostly Black trans women)
- 2021: At least 57 transgender people murdered (record high)
- 2022: At least 32 transgender people murdered
- 2023: Violence continued at alarming rates
Advocates emphasize these numbers likely undercount victims due to:
- Misgendering by police and media
- Deadnaming (using birth names) in reports
- Unsolved cases and unreported deaths
June 2020 Surge
During George Floyd protests, activists pushed #BlackTransLivesMatter to ensure Black trans people weren’t erased from racial justice conversations. Major demonstrations specifically honored Black trans victims:
Brooklyn Liberation: 15,000+ people gathered at Brooklyn Museum for Black trans lives rally (June 14, 2020)
Trans Day of Action: Cities nationwide held marches centering Black trans women
Historical Context
Black trans women were leaders in LGBTQ+ liberation:
- Marsha P. Johnson (Stonewall Riots, 1969)
- Sylvia Rivera (co-founded STAR - Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries)
- Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (Stonewall veteran, advocate)
Despite pioneering the movement, Black trans people often face exclusion from LGBTQ+ spaces and resources.
Systemic Barriers
#BlackTransLivesMatter highlights:
- Housing discrimination forcing survival sex work
- Employment discrimination (unemployment rates 4x cisgender rates)
- Healthcare barriers and denial of gender-affirming care
- Police violence and profiling
- Criminalization of sex work increasing vulnerability
- Lack of shelters accepting trans women
Mutual Aid & Organizing
The hashtag mobilized:
- Fundraising for Black trans people’s basic needs
- Bail funds for arrested protesters
- Housing assistance and emergency funds
- Mental health support networks
- Job programs and skills training
- Legal defense for survivors fighting back
Cultural Visibility
#BlackTransLivesMatter demanded:
- Media coverage of murdered Black trans women
- Investigations into unsolved murders
- Policy changes protecting trans people
- Resources directed to most marginalized LGBTQ+ members
The movement insists: “All Black Lives Matter” must include Black trans lives.
