Origin & Impact
Blackfish premiered at Sundance in January 2013 but exploded when CNN broadcast it in October. The documentary exposed the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau and SeaWorld’s treatment of captive orcas. The hashtag became a rallying cry for animal rights activists calling to boycott SeaWorld.
Celebrities endorsed the boycott, musicians cancelled SeaWorld performances, and public opinion shifted dramatically. SeaWorld’s attendance and stock price plummeted. In 2016, SeaWorld announced it would end orca breeding. Blackfish demonstrated how a documentary paired with social media activism could force corporate policy changes and reshape public perception of animal entertainment.
