Born This Way Foundation
#BornThisWayFoundation represents Lady Gaga’s nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting youth mental health and creating a kinder, braver world. Founded in February 2012 by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta, the foundation takes its name from Gaga’s anthem “Born This Way.”
Mission & Focus
The foundation addresses:
- Mental health awareness and support
- Anti-bullying initiatives
- LGBTQ+ youth empowerment
- Kindness and acceptance education
- Trauma-informed care
Unlike many celebrity charities, Born This Way Foundation emphasizes youth-led programming, giving young people platforms to share their stories and drive change.
Major Initiatives
BeKind21 Campaign — A 21-day challenge encouraging daily acts of kindness, used by schools and communities worldwide.
Channel Kindness — A digital platform where young people share stories of compassion and resilience.
Teen Mental Health First Aid — Training programs educating youth in recognizing and responding to mental health crises.
Cultural Impact
The foundation partnered with corporations, educational institutions, and mental health organizations to normalize conversations about emotional well-being. #BornThisWayFoundation frequently trends during Mental Health Awareness Month (May) and Pride Month (June).
Lady Gaga’s personal openness about her own mental health struggles — including PTSD and fibromyalgia — added authenticity and reduced stigma around seeking help.
Research & Advocacy
The foundation funded research on youth mental health and advocated for policy changes improving access to mental health services in schools and communities.
