The Boston Celtics Big Three (2007-2012) united Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen to restore glory to one of basketball’s most storied franchises.
Formation
In summer 2007, the Celtics made blockbuster trades to acquire Kevin Garnett from Minnesota and Ray Allen from Seattle, pairing them with franchise cornerstone Paul Pierce. The move instantly transformed Boston from lottery team to championship contender.
2008 Championship
The Big Three’s first season together produced immediate results: 66-16 regular season record and the franchise’s 17th NBA championship (defeating the Lakers 4-2 in the Finals). Paul Pierce won Finals MVP, and KG’s defensive intensity anchored the league’s best defense.
The “Ubuntu” (I am because we are) philosophy defined their selfless team chemistry, with three future Hall of Famers sacrificing individual stats for collective success.
Legacy & Rivalry
The Celtics-Lakers Finals rivalry was renewed in 2008 and 2010 (Lakers won rematch 4-3), creating some of the decade’s most memorable playoff basketball. The Big Three made five consecutive playoff appearances, reaching two Finals.
Kevin Garnett’s “Anything is possible!” post-championship interview became iconic. The team’s success inspired other franchises to pursue superteam constructions, culminating in Miami’s Big Three formation in 2010.
