The interactive learning platform for math and science that sponsored seemingly every educational YouTube channel.
Problem-Solving First
Brilliant.org launched August 2012 with interactive problem-solving courses in math, science, and computer science. Unlike video lectures, Brilliant emphasized hands-on problem-solving—learning by doing. Courses covered topics from algebra to quantum computing through visual, interactive lessons.
YouTube Sponsorship Blitz
By 2018-2021, Brilliant sponsored every major educational YouTuber: Veritasium, Vsauce, Kurzgesagt, 3Blue1Brown, MinutePhysics. The sponsorships became running joke—viewers could predict “This video is sponsored by Brilliant” before the midroll. But the marketing worked: millions signed up for free trials.
Subscription Model Success
Brilliant’s $12-20/month subscription model proved viable—by 2023, 10+ million users had accounts. The platform added daily challenges, community problem-solving, and courses on AI, data science, and neural networks. While completion rates were likely low, Brilliant showed interactive learning could supplement traditional STEM education.
