Clash of Clans, released August 2, 2012, by Finnish studio Supercell, pioneered the mobile strategy genre and became one of the highest-grossing mobile games of all time, generating over $10 billion in revenue.

Gameplay Loop

Players build villages, train troops, and raid other players’ bases for resources. Clan Wars (2014) added cooperative competition. The game’s “freemium” model—free to play, pay to speed up progress—became mobile gaming’s template.

Cultural Dominance

At its 2015 peak, Clash generated $1.5 million daily. Super Bowl ads featuring Liam Neeson and Christoph Waltz brought mainstream recognition. YouTube strategy channels (Chief Pat, Godson) built empires. The game spawned Clash Royale (2016), another billion-dollar hit.

Though declining from its peak, Clash of Clans remained profitable through 2024 with regular updates, esports leagues, and a dedicated playerbase.
