The youth-led school walkout movement that Greta Thunberg inspired, mobilizing millions of students globally to strike for climate action.
Greta’s Solo Protest
In August 2018, 15-year-old Greta Thunberg began skipping school to protest outside Swedish parliament, holding a “Skolstrejk för klimatet” (School Strike for Climate) sign. Her solo action inspired students worldwide. By November 2018, thousands of Australian students walked out. By March 2019, 1.4 million students in 112 countries participated in coordinated global strikes.
September 20, 2019: Peak Mobilization
The September 20, 2019 climate strike was the largest climate mobilization in history: 4+ million people in 150+ countries, led by students. New York alone saw 250,000 marchers. The movement’s slogan: “Why go to school if you won’t listen to the educated?” Students demanded adults act on climate science.
Pandemic Disruption and Digital Shift
COVID-19 lockdowns (2020) made in-person strikes impossible. The movement shifted to #ClimateStrikeOnline and #DigitalStrike. Momentum dissipated as pandemic dominated attention. By 2022-2023, smaller strikes continued, but the mass mobilization era had ended. The movement proved youth could force climate onto political agendas, even if policy responses remained inadequate.
