CrashCourse

YouTube 2011-12 education active
Also known as: CrashCourseYouTubeJohnGreen

CrashCourse launched in December 2011 as a YouTube educational channel created by brothers John and Hank Green (of VlogBrothers fame). The channel revolutionized online learning by producing fast-paced, engaging, and deeply informative 10-15 minute video lessons across dozens of subjects.

Educational YouTube Pioneer

CrashCourse began with World History (hosted by John Green, author of “The Fault in Our Stars”) and Biology (hosted by Hank Green, science communicator). The formula combined rapid-fire delivery, humor, animations, historical reenactments, and John’s iconic “Hi, I’m John Green” catchphrase.

By 2023, CrashCourse had created 45+ complete courses covering World History, US History, Chemistry, Physics, Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, Economics, Computer Science, Astronomy, Anatomy & Physiology, and more. The channel garnered 15 million+ subscribers and 2 billion+ views, becoming required viewing in classrooms worldwide.

Production Quality and Accessibility

Unlike Khan Academy’s whiteboard-and-voice format, CrashCourse invested in professional production: custom animations, thought bubbles, historical imagery, and hosts’ charismatic delivery. Episodes were meticulously researched and scripted, with sources cited in video descriptions.

The channel offered professionally-translated subtitles in 10+ languages and transcripts, making content accessible globally. Teachers integrated CrashCourse into flipped classrooms, homework assignments, and review sessions.

Funding Model and Influence

Initially funded through sponsorships and Patreon support, CrashCourse partnered with PBS Digital Studios in 2013, providing stable funding while maintaining editorial independence. The success proved educational content could be financially sustainable while remaining free to learners.

CrashCourse inspired thousands of educational YouTubers and demonstrated that learning content could be entertaining, rigorous, and viral. The channel’s combination of academic depth and YouTube-native presentation became the template for educational content in the streaming era.
