#Cuomo dominated August 2021 as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned following a damning report detailing sexual harassment allegations from multiple women, marking a dramatic fall from grace for a politician who had been celebrated as a pandemic hero just months earlier.

On August 10, 2021, Cuomo announced his resignation effective August 24, making him the first New York governor to resign in disgrace since Eliot Spitzer in 2008. The decision came one week after New York Attorney General Letitia James released a 165-page report concluding that Cuomo sexually harassed at least 11 women and created a hostile work environment.

The allegations included unwanted touching, inappropriate comments about women’s appearances, and creating a culture of fear that prevented victims from coming forward. One former aide, Charlotte Bennett, said Cuomo asked her inappropriate questions about her sex life and whether she was open to relationships with older men.

#Cuomo trended as the scandal unfolded throughout 2021. The governor had been lionized in 2020 for his daily COVID-19 briefings that contrasted with federal leadership. He wrote a book celebrating his pandemic response and even received an Emmy for his televised briefings. The reversal was swift and severe.

The sexual harassment allegations compounded existing controversies. Cuomo faced intense criticism for a March 2020 directive requiring nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients, which critics blamed for thousands of deaths. His administration was also accused of undercounting nursing home deaths to minimize political damage.

Initially defiant, Cuomo denied wrongdoing and resisted calls to resign from President Biden, Chuck Schumer, and virtually every major New York Democrat. But as support evaporated and impeachment became inevitable, he stepped down while still denying the allegations.

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul became New York’s first female governor upon Cuomo’s departure. The transition was seen as both historic and overdue, given Cuomo’s documented pattern of undermining female colleagues.

#Cuomo became a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked political power and enabling cultures that protect powerful men. It demonstrated that #MeToo accountability could reach even the most powerful political figures, regardless of partisan affiliation.

The hashtag also sparked discussions about the complexities of evaluating leaders—how competence in one area doesn’t excuse abusive behavior, and how pandemic heroes could simultaneously be workplace harassers.
