The #MeToo movement exploded in October 2017 as millions shared sexual harassment and assault stories, toppling powerful men across entertainment, politics, and business. What began as Hollywood reckoning became global phenomenon shifting workplace culture, consent discourse, and accountability standards.

The Weinstein Catalyst

New York Times (October 5) and New Yorker (October 10) 2017 exposés detailed Harvey Weinstein’s decades of sexual abuse. Actress Alyssa Milano tweeted “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’” on October 15—though activist Tarana Burke created the phrase in 2006 for survivors of color.

Within 24 hours, 12 million Facebook posts used #MeToo. By year-end, the hashtag appeared 19 million times across 85 countries.

The Reckoning

Powerful men fell rapidly: Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K., Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose, Les Moonves, R. Kelly, Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly resigned, fired, or prosecuted. Weinstein got 23-year prison sentence (2020). Accusations destroyed careers overnight.

Time’s Up & Structural Change

Hollywood actresses launched Time’s Up (January 2018) with $24M legal defense fund for workplace harassment victims. The movement pushed corporate policy changes, NDAs restrictions, and diversity initiatives. Golden Globes 2018 saw stars wear black in solidarity.

Backlash & Due Process Debates

Critics warned of mob justice, false accusations, and career destruction without trials. High-profile cases (Aziz Ansari, Al Franken) sparked debates about proportionality and consent gray areas. Some warned movement conflated workplace harassment with criminal assault.

Global Spread

The movement resonated globally: #BalanceTonPorc (France), #YoTambién (Spain/Latin America), #QuellaVoltaChe (Italy). India, South Korea, and China saw localized versions despite government suppression.

The Legacy

#MeToo normalized discussing sexual violence, shifted consent culture, and proved social media’s power for accountability. By 2023, workplace harassment remained pervasive but corporate/legal responses transformed.
