Origin & Impact

The Doge meme exploded in August 2013, featuring a photo of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu, surrounded by broken English phrases in Comic Sans. The intentionally awkward grammar (“such wow,” “very amaze,” “much crypto”) became internet vernacular. Doge was named Know Your Meme’s top meme of 2013.

The meme’s impact extended beyond humor when programmers created Dogecoin as a joke cryptocurrency in December 2013. Dogecoin later gained serious value, endorsed by Elon Musk, and funded charitable causes. Doge demonstrated how absurdist internet culture could spawn real-world economic and cultural phenomena.
