The $200 Nylon Bag That Broke Trust

In November 2018, Bethesda’s $200 Fallout 76 Power Armor Edition promised a “canvas West Tek duffel bag.” Customers received a cheap nylon bag instead. Bethesda’s initial response—offering 500 in-game Atoms (worth $5)—sparked fury and became a case study in catastrophic customer relations. The scandal, combined with Fallout 76’s disastrous launch, severely damaged Bethesda’s reputation.

The False Advertising

The Power Armor Edition was marketed with images and descriptions of a canvas bag. Unboxing videos in November 2018 revealed a cheap nylon bag instead—visibly lower quality, different material, clearly not as advertised.

When customers complained, Bethesda initially responded: “We aren’t planning on doing anything about it.” A support ticket leak showed a representative saying they couldn’t make canvas bags due to “material shortage” and offering 500 Atoms (roughly $5 value) as compensation for the $200 product discrepancy.

The Escalating Disaster

The response outraged customers. $200 for a collector’s edition, false advertising on the main collectible, and a $5 token compensation? The story went viral:

  • Gaming media covered it extensively
  • Consumer protection agencies began investigations
  • Players organized refund campaigns
  • The incident combined with Fallout 76’s many technical problems

Bethesda’s handling made it worse. They only committed to producing canvas bags after massive backlash, and the replacement program had issues (requiring customers to submit personal data through unsecured support tickets, leading to a separate data breach).

The Rum Bottle Sequel

In December 2019, Bethesda announced a $79.99 “Fallout 76 Nuka Dark Rum” in plastic bottles shaped like Nuka Cola bottles from the game. Photos showed impressive glass bottles. Customers received cheap plastic shells around standard rum bottles. The same bait-and-switch pattern repeated.

The pattern suggested systematic misrepresentation rather than isolated mistakes.

Long-Term Damage

The canvas bag scandal combined with:

  • Fallout 76’s broken launch (bugs, crashes, no NPCs)
  • The $18 “Red Rocket Power Armor paint” DLC controversy
  • Technical problems persisting months post-launch
  • Bethesda banning players for having too much ammo (a bug they created)

These compounding disasters shattered Bethesda’s goodwill built over Skyrim/Fallout 3/Fallout 4. The company went from beloved RPG developer to symbol of corporate greed and incompetence. The reputation damage persisted through 2020-2023, affecting Starfield’s (2023) reception.
