The 2015 FIFA corruption scandal saw 14 officials indicted by US Department of Justice for racketeering, fraud, and money laundering — exposing decades of bribery in soccer’s governing body and toppling president Sepp Blatter.

The Arrests

May 27, 2015, Zurich: Swiss police raided Baur au Lac hotel during FIFA Congress. Arrested seven FIFA officials at dawn. Perp-walked in front of global media.

US DOJ indicted 14 officials (7 arrested in Zurich, 7 separately):

  • Racketeering conspiracy
  • Wire fraud
  • Money laundering
  • Bribery for World Cup hosting bids, media rights, sponsorships

FBI investigation spanned decades. $150+ million in bribes uncovered.

Sepp Blatter’s Fall

June 2, 2015: Blatter re-elected FIFA president (fifth term) despite scandal swirling.

June 6, 2015: Blatter announced resignation (four days after re-election). Pressure unbearable. Later banned 8 years from soccer (reduced to 6).

Michel Platini (UEFA president, Blatter successor favorite) also banned for corruption. Gianni Infantino elected FIFA president (2016-present).

The Corruption Revealed

Schemes exposed:

  • World Cup hosting bribes (Russia 2018, Qatar 2022 bids questioned)
  • Media rights kickbacks (Latin America, Caribbean)
  • Sponsorship fraud
  • Vote-buying for FIFA elections

Chuck Blazer (US official, FIFA ExCo member) turned FBI informant. Wore wire to meetings. Pleaded guilty to ten charges.

Legacy Damage

FIFA’s reputation destroyed. “Corruption” and “FIFA” synonymous. Reforms implemented (term limits, transparency, ethics committee).

Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 World Cups proceeded despite bribery allegations. Qatar particularly controversial (migrant worker deaths, LGBTQ+ rights, desert heat).

Cultural Impact

“FIFA is corrupt” became universally accepted fact. Video game (EA Sports FIFA) eventually renamed (EA Sports FC, 2023) to distance from organization.

Sepp Blatter’s smirk became symbol of impunity. Swiss police raids became iconic images.

Soccer survived. FIFA reformed (somewhat). But stain remains.
