Origin Story
#FollowFriday (often shortened to #FF) was created by Micah Baldwin (@micah) on January 16, 2009. The concept was simple: every Friday, recommend Twitter accounts worth following. It became the first viral weekly hashtag tradition on any platform. At its peak, #FollowFriday trended every single Friday without fail, generating millions of tweets. It created a culture of community curation and mutual promotion that defined early Twitter’s generous, communal spirit.
Cultural Impact
#FollowFriday invented the concept of recurring hashtag events tied to days of the week. It directly inspired #ThrowbackThursday, #MotivationMonday, #TransformationTuesday, #WisdomWednesday, and dozens more day-of-week hashtags. The tag also established the practice of social media users curating content for each other. Brands quickly co-opted the format for marketing. While the tag has faded, its legacy — the weekly hashtag tradition — remains one of social media’s defining features.
