Forza Motorsport is Microsoft’s flagship racing simulation franchise for Xbox and PC, developed by Turn 10 Studios, known for realistic physics, massive car rosters (500-700+ cars), and accessible-yet-deep gameplay balancing simulation with fun.
The Forza Split
Forza Motorsport — Track-focused sim racing (numbered titles: FM4, FM7, FM 2023 reboot)
Forza Horizon — Open-world arcade-sim hybrid set in real locations (UK, Australia, Mexico) developed by Playground Games
Forza Motorsport 7 Peak
FM7 (2017) featured 700+ cars, 32 tracks, dynamic weather, and 4K/HDR on Xbox One X. It became the definitive console sim until it was delisted in 2021 due to expiring car licenses—a recurring industry problem.
The game’s Rivals mode (time attack leaderboards) and multiplayer hoppers created competitive communities, though not as hardcore as iRacing.
Forza Motorsport (2023 Reboot)
After 6-year gap, Turn 10 rebooted the series with Forza Motorsport (2023), dropping numbering. Built for Xbox Series X/S and PC, it featured:
- Ray-tracing and photogrammetry
- Car progression system (upgrade parts through racing)
- Full dynamic time-of-day on all tracks
Reception was mixed: stunning graphics, but lack of content at launch (smaller car/track list than FM7) and forced progression frustrated players.
Livery Community
Forza’s vinyl editor enabled intricate custom liveries. Talented creators replicate real race cars, design original schemes, and share via Storefront, creating a creator economy where top designers earn in-game credits.
