Also known as: FSD BetaFullSelfDriving

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving beta software released to select owners October 2020, promising eventual autonomy while remaining legally a driver-assist system.

The $10K Promise

Tesla sold “Full Self-Driving” package for $10K (later $15K) since 2016, promising future autonomy. For years, it was vaporware - just enhanced Autopilot. October 2020: FSD Beta v1 rolled out to small group (~1,000 owners).

Beta expanded gradually: 2,000 users (late 2020), 100,000+ (2021), 400,000+ (2023). Owners paid $10-15K to beta test software with mixed results, posting videos compulsively.

YouTube Influencers

FSD Beta created YouTube niche: Owners filming every drive, narrating failures/successes. Channels like Whole Mars Catalog, AI Addict, Chuck Cook (unprotected left turn saga) gained 100K+ subscribers.

Videos showed impressive capabilities: Navigating complex intersections, handling construction zones, smooth lane changes. Also terrifying failures: phantom braking, wrong-way turns, curb strikes, running stop signs.

Regulatory Scrutiny

NHTSA opened investigation (2021) after crashes involving Autopilot/FSD. California DMV accused Tesla of “false advertising” - “Full Self-Driving” name misleading when requiring constant supervision.

Tesla’s defense: It’s beta, drivers responsible, name aspirational. Critics: You can’t sell unfinished safety-critical software to untrained public as beta testers.

Safety Debate

Elon Musk tweeted FSD Beta safer than human drivers (no peer-reviewed data). Independent analysis showed mixed results. Some drives flawless; others required instant interventions.

“Disengagements per mile” became metric. Early beta: <10 miles between interventions. 2023: 50-100+ miles. Improving but nowhere near true autonomy.

The Timeline That Wasn’t

Musk’s predictions:

  • 2017: “Full autonomy by end of year”
  • 2019: “1 million robo-taxis by 2020”
  • 2020: “Feature complete this year”
  • 2023: “FSD will be amazing by end of year”

Pattern: Perpetual “soon” promises, never delivered. FSD Beta remained Level 2 autonomy (driver must supervise) through 2023, not Level 4/5 (car drives itself).

Consumer Psychology

$10-15K gamble on future capability. Sunk cost fallacy kept believers invested. “It’s getting better!” narratives after every update. Critics saw it as paying to debug software.
