#Gener8ion is the French audio-visual project of electronic producer Surkin (Benoît Heitz) and filmmaker Romain Gavras — a music-and-film partnership whose April 2026 single “Storm” with Yung Lean became one of the year’s most-watched music videos and earned three nominations at the September 27, 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year. The duo premiered the sequel “Storm II” live during the VMAs broadcast, pushing the project from critic-and-club notoriety into mainstream pop culture.

Origin

Gener8ion is a continuation of two long careers rather than a new act. Surkin emerged in mid-2000s French dance music on the Institubes label — Wonderland and KALTBLUT both position him among the “French Touch 2.0” generation known for welding club music to pop and rap. Romain Gavras, son of filmmaker Costa-Gavras, has directed music videos since the 2000s for M.I.A. (including “Bad Girls”), Justice (“Stress”), Kanye West, Jay-Z and Jamie xx, and feature films including The World Is Yours and Athena. The two formally began working together around 2022, with the single “Neo Surf” (featuring 070 Shake) and a wider video-and-record project with M.I.A. (“The New International Sound, Pt. 2”).

The Music

Gener8ion’s output is characterized by cinematic scale: tracks are released in parallel with music videos staged more like short films, and the project is as much a directorial statement as a music catalog. “Storm” is the clearest example — a nearly six-minute video choreographed by Damien Jalet and set in a Leeds boarding school in 2034, with Yung Lean playing the central figure. The record itself is pitched halfway between alt-pop and electronic score. KALTBLUT and TheFader both treated the song and video as a single artifact rather than audio with accompanying visuals.

Critical Reception

Critical coverage framed Gener8ion as the kind of music video act that only exists at the intersection of Surkin’s producer discipline and Gavras’s filmmaking budget-and-attention. The Onassis Foundation hosted a Gavras-and-Gener8ion exhibition — Visions of 2034 — at London’s 180 Studios, pairing the music with gallery installation. DavidReviews, Wonderland and TheFader covered the “Storm” video as one of 2026’s most ambitious short-film-scale releases.

Peak Virality

“Storm” accumulated more than 17 million YouTube views between April and September 2026, boosted first by music-press coverage (TheFader, Numéro, KALTBLUT) and then by the VMA nominations announcement. The VMAs performance of “Storm II” became one of the September 27, 2026 broadcast’s biggest-applauded moments, and the choreography — delivered by Jalet’s company — produced the most-shared clip of the ceremony on social.

Cultural Impact

Gener8ion’s VMAs run is one of the clearest 2020s illustrations of the music-video-as-short-film thesis reaching the mainstream pop-award stage. The project’s gallery exhibition at 180 Studios also marks a continued blurring between contemporary art, electronic music and cinema — a lineage that runs through M.I.A., Justice and other Gavras collaborators but reaches a different center of gravity when the director is co-credited as half of the act.
