Origins
#GlazedDonutSkin was coined by Hailey Bieber’s makeup artist Mary Phillips in March 2022 during the Met Gala prep. The look describes ultra-dewy, glossy, almost wet-looking skin resembling a Krispy Kreme glazed donut’s sheen.
The aesthetic evolved from K-beauty’s “glass skin” (2017) but took glossiness to the extreme with liquid highlighters mixed into foundation, strategic placement on high points, and a “wet” rather than merely “dewy” appearance.
Hailey Bieber’s Influence
The trend solidified Hailey Bieber (Rhode founder) as a beauty icon with her Met Gala 2022 viral look, Rhode Skin launch (June 2022 - Peptide Glazing Fluid became cult product), and TikTok tutorials (@haileybieber, 20M+ followers). The accompanying “glazed donut nails” (chrome nails) complemented the skin aesthetic.
Rhode Skin’s launch generated $500K+ revenue first day, with Peptide Glazing Fluid selling out in hours. TikTok #RhodeSkin accumulated 300M+ views.
Key Products
Hailey’s routine includes Rhode Peptide Glazing Fluid ($29), Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter, and Glossier Futuredew. Competitors rushed to release glazing products: Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops, Milk Makeup Odyssey Glow Oil, Summer Fridays Dream Glow Drops.
Technique
Layer dewy primer, lightweight base (skin tint/BB cream), liquid highlighter (mixed or applied after), cream blush, and glossy lips. Avoid matte powders. Critics note the look works best for dry/normal skin (oily skin may look greasy), requires touch-ups, and often looks better in photos than real life.
Evolution
By 2023: Strawberry Glaze Skin (pinker version), Clean Girl Glazed (minimal makeup with strategic glow), Dolphin Skin (even wetter, more extreme gloss).
