Overview
Gravel cycling uses drop-bar road bikes with wider tires (35-50mm) on unpaved roads, fire roads, and light trails. The discipline exploded in the mid-2010s as a middle ground between road cycling (restrictive routes) and mountain biking (technical skill barriers).
The Unbound Gravel Event
Unbound Gravel (formerly Dirty Kanza, founded 2006 in Kansas) became gravel cycling’s signature event, growing from 34 riders to 5,000+ (2019). The 200-mile race features no support, extreme weather, and bonking horror stories.
Gravel Bike Market Boom
Major manufacturers launched gravel-specific bikes: Specialized Diverge (2015), Canyon Grail (2018), Trek Checkpoint (2017). By 2020, gravel bikes outsold cyclocross bikes and became one of cycling’s fastest-growing segments.
Culture and Inclusivity
Gravel events emphasize participation over competition, with post-race beer and live music. The scene attracted recreational riders intimidated by road racing’s intensity or mountain biking’s technical demands.
