Hades’ September 2020 full release became the roguelike that perfected the genre, winning Game of the Year awards by weaving narrative progression into repeated death cycles and making every run feel meaningful.

Design Brilliance

Supergiant Games solved roguelikes’ narrative problem - how to tell stories when players constantly die and restart. Hades made death the point: Zagreus escaping the underworld required failure. Each death triggered new dialogue, relationship progression, and story reveals. The Greek mythology setting felt fresh, with gods portrayed as dysfunctional family.

Character Depth

The voice acting (Darren Korb, Logan Cunningham, Avalon Penrose) brought depth to dozens of characters. Zagreus’ relationships (especially with Megaera, Thanatos, and dad Hades) developed organically. The writing balanced humor, heart, and mythology respectfully. Romance options included everyone, making the game queer-inclusive without fanfare.

Critical Sweep

Hades earned 93 Metacritic, won Best Indie Game and Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2020, and was nominated for Game of the Year (losing to The Last of Us Part II). It sold 1+ million copies in early access, proving the early access model could work for narrative games.

The hashtag represents roguelikes achieving mainstream appeal through narrative integration and polish.
