Halo Infinite, released December 8, 2021, marked Xbox’s flagship franchise’s return after a troubled six-year development. The game launched with a surprise free-to-play multiplayer beta on November 15, 2021, during Xbox’s 20th anniversary.

Development Hell to Redemption

After a disastrous 2020 reveal (the “Craig the Brute” meme mocked dated graphics), 343 Industries delayed the game a year. The final product featured excellent campaign gameplay returning to Halo’s roots: open-world exploration, tight gunplay, and a grappling hook that reinvigorated movement.

Mixed Reception

Critics praised the campaign and core multiplayer shooting. However, missing features (Forge, co-op campaign, playlists), aggressive monetization, and slow content updates frustrated fans. Player counts dropped significantly months after launch.

Despite issues, Halo Infinite’s campaign earned acclaim, and multiplayer’s foundation remained strong—343 just needed to build on it with consistent updates.
