Also known as: HomeschoolingHomeschoolMom

The #HomeschoolLife hashtag documented the explosive growth of homeschooling in the United States, which increased from 1.5 million students (3%) in 2010 to over 6 million students (11%) by 2023. What was once a fringe educational choice became increasingly mainstream, accelerated dramatically by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pre-Pandemic Growth

Before 2020, homeschooling grew steadily driven by diverse motivations: religious families seeking values-based education, parents concerned about school safety/bullying, families wanting customized learning for gifted or special needs children, and “unschoolers” rejecting traditional pedagogy.

Social media transformed homeschooling culture by connecting isolated families into vibrant online communities. Pinterest became essential for curriculum ideas, Instagram showcased aesthetically-pleasing learning spaces, and YouTube provided endless educational content. The hashtag documented field trips, curriculum hauls, and the daily reality of teaching your own children.

Pandemic Acceleration

COVID-19 school closures in March 2020 forced every parent into emergency homeschooling, exposing millions to the possibility of permanent homeschooling. Even after schools reopened, many families continued - homeschool numbers doubled from 5.4% to 11.1% between spring 2020 and fall 2021.

New homeschoolers included tech-savvy professionals who could work remotely while overseeing education, families frustrated with Zoom school quality, and parents who discovered their children thrived with individualized pacing.

Challenges and Community

The hashtag revealed both joys and struggles: flexibility and family bonding versus teaching burnout, socialization concerns, and lack of personal time. Homeschool co-ops, pod learning arrangements, and hybrid programs emerged to address these challenges while maintaining homeschool benefits.
