#JusticeForElijah demanded accountability for the August 24, 2019 death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black massage therapist killed by Aurora, Colorado police and paramedics.

McClain, who had anemia and often wore a ski mask for warmth, was stopped while walking home. Officers placed him in a cahoots chokehold; paramedics injected him with 500mg ketamine (overdose for his weight). He suffered cardiac arrest and died days later.

2020 resurgence: Amid George Floyd protests, a 2019 petition demanding justice reached 5 million signatures — one of Change.org’s largest ever.

Viral violin vigil (June 2020): Violinist Elijah Mack performed at a memorial, echoing McClain’s love of playing violin for shelter animals. The video went viral, humanizing McClain’s story.

Investigations: Colorado AG reopened case (June 2020). Federal investigation followed.

2021 charges: 3 officers, 2 paramedics indicted on manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide.

2023 convictions: Paramedic Peter Cichuniec convicted of criminally negligent homicide (5 years prison); Officer Randy Roedema convicted of homicide/assault (14 months jail). Others acquitted or convicted on lesser charges.

Colorado reforms: Ban on carotid holds, ketamine restrictions, body camera requirements.

McClain’s gentleness (he played violin for shelter cats, apologized to officers while dying) made his death especially heartbreaking and galvanized calls for police accountability beyond high-profile cases.
