The Ugliest Divorce in Gaming

The 2015 split between Konami and legendary director Hideo Kojima—creator of the Metal Gear series—became gaming’s most acrimonious breakup. Konami removed “A Hideo Kojima Game” branding from Metal Gear Solid V marketing, reportedly barred Kojima from accepting awards, and moved aggressively into pachinko machines while abandoning AAA game development. The #FucKonami movement reflected industry-wide anger at the treatment of gaming’s auteurs.

The First Signs

In March 2015, Konami removed Kojima Productions branding from MGS V: The Phantom Pain promotional materials and the official website. “A Hideo Kojima Game”—the director’s signature credit appearing in all his games—was stripped from marketing. Konami redesigned the Kojima Productions logo to remove Kojima’s association.

The petty erasure of a beloved creator from his own work signaled deep internal conflict. Rumors emerged of Konami restricting Kojima’s communications and access to staff.

The Phantom Pain’s Truncated Release

Metal Gear Solid V launched September 1, 2015, to critical acclaim (93 Metacritic) but obvious incompleteness. Chapter 2 felt rushed, with repeated missions and a missing Chapter 3. The story ended abruptly without resolving major plot threads.

Fans blamed Konami for forcing release before Kojima could complete his vision. Datamined content revealed planned missions and story beats that never made it into the final game. The conflict between Kojima’s perfectionism and Konami’s financial pressures had reached breaking point.

The Awards Ban

When MGS V won awards at The Game Awards 2015, Konami reportedly forbade Kojima from attending to accept them. Geoff Keighley announced Kojima “was prevented from being here tonight” while presenting Best Action Game to Metal Gear Solid V. The pettiness shocked the industry.

Kojima officially left Konami in October 2015. His exit was treated like a prisoner release rather than a celebrated creator’s departure.

The #FucKonami Movement

Gaming communities turned on Konami with rare unanimity:

  • #FucKonami trended globally
  • Fans boycotted Konami games
  • Pro Evolution Soccer and other franchises suffered reputation damage
  • The company became synonymous with corporate greed over artistry

Konami’s pivot to pachinko machines and mobile games (turning Silent Hill and Castlevania into gambling machines) reinforced the image of abandoning gaming heritage for profit.

The Aftermath

Kojima formed Kojima Productions as an independent studio, partnering with Sony to create Death Stranding (2019). Meanwhile, Konami canceled Silent Hills (P.T.), abandoned most AAA development, and focused on mobile games and gambling. The Metal Gear series effectively died with Kojima’s departure.

The split became a cautionary tale about publisher-creator relationships and corporate mismanagement of creative talent.
