“LEEEEROY JENKINS!” - Gaming’s Most Famous Charge
On May 11, 2005, a World of Warcraft video titled “A Rough Go” was uploaded showing player Leeroy Jenkins charging into a dungeon full of dragon whelps, screaming his name while his guild meticulously planned strategy. The 3-minute video became one of the internet’s first truly viral gaming moments, spawning a meme that transcended WoW to become shorthand for reckless enthusiasm ruining careful plans.
The Video
The Upper Blackrock Spire raid video showed the guild PALS FOR LIFE discussing intricate strategy for the whelp room encounter, calculating survival percentages down to “32.33, repeating of course.” After a minute of tactical discussion, Leeroy returns from being AFK and charges in screaming “LEEEEROY JENKINS!” The entire raid wipes. Leeroy’s defense: “At least I have chicken.”
The video was staged (admitted by the creators in 2008), but it perfectly captured the tension between hardcore raiders’ meticulous planning and casual players’ impulsive gameplay. The humor resonated universally.
The Explosion
Within weeks, “Leeroy Jenkins” spread beyond WoW:
- 50+ million YouTube views across re-uploads
- Featured on mainstream news (including Good Morning America)
- Jeopardy! question in 2005
- Referenced in TV shows (How I Met Your Mother, My Name Is Earl)
- Became verb: “to Leeroy” = recklessly charge in
The phrase entered everyday vocabulary as shorthand for enthusiastic but catastrophic action.
The Legacy
Blizzard embraced the meme:
- Added Leeroy Jenkins card to Hearthstone (2014) with “Charge” ability and summon quote
- Achievements in WoW reference the moment
- Ben Schulz (the player) became minor celebrity, appearing at BlizzCons
The moment demonstrated gaming’s cultural penetration. A 3-minute staged WoW video became one of the most recognized internet moments of the 2000s, introducing millions to MMO raiding culture while being funny enough that non-gamers could appreciate it.
“Leeroy Jenkins” remains timeless—still referenced 20+ years later as the platonic ideal of a plan going catastrophically wrong due to one person’s impatience.
