Leicester City won the 2015-16 Premier League at 5,000-to-1 odds — the greatest underdog story in sports history.

The Miracle Season

A team that nearly relegated the previous season won England’s top division with:

  • £23 million squad (Chelsea spent £200M+)
  • Claudio Ranieri manager (72 days in job)
  • Jamie Vardy (non-league player 5 years earlier)
  • N’Golo Kanté (unknown French midfielder)
  • Riyad Mahrez (£400K signing)

They clinched the title on May 2, 2016, when Tottenham drew 2-2 with Chelsea. Fans celebrated in the streets. Bookmakers lost £25 million.

Cultural Phenomenon

The story transcended sports:

  • Andrea Bocelli sang at King Power Stadium
  • “Chat shit get banged” — Vardy’s Instagram philosophy
  • Kasabian “Fire” became unofficial anthem
  • Ranieri’s love of pizza became media fascination

Aftermath

They reached Champions League quarterfinals the next season. Kanté left for Chelsea and won another title. Ranieri was sacked in February 2017. Owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha died in helicopter crash (2018).

The season remains sports’ most improbable triumph — proof that fairy tales exist.
