Ex-Tesla Engineer’s Vision
Lucid Motors (founded 2007, relaunched 2016) led by Peter Rawlinson (former Tesla Model S chief engineer). Premise: Out-engineer Tesla with superior efficiency, luxury, technology.

EPA Range Record
517-mile EPA range (Dream Range version) crushed Tesla Model S Long Range (405 miles), Mercedes EQS (350), BMW i7. Engineering achievement: 4.5 miles/kWh efficiency vs. Tesla’s 3.8.
Lucid’s battery pack (113 kWh) wasn’t dramatically bigger - efficiency came from aerodynamics (0.21 Cd), motor design, thermal management. Rawlinson’s Tesla experience showed.
Luxury Positioning
Price tiers: $87K (Pure), $107K (Touring), $138K (Grand Touring), $169K (Dream Edition). Competed with Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7-Series, not Model 3.
Interior: Lounge-like space (compact electric motors freed interior volume), 34-inch curved display, glass canopy roof, executive rear seats. Reviewers praised luxury, criticized software bugs.
Production Hell Lite
First deliveries: October 2021. Initial target: 20,000 cars in 2022. Reality: 7,180. Supply chain issues, manufacturing kinks, quality control challenges.
Factory in Casa Grande, Arizona (former Boeing facility). Capacity: 365K cars/year (vastly underutilized). Capital intensive, slow ramp.
SPAC & Stock Collapse
July 2021: Lucid went public via SPAC, $24B valuation. Stock peaked $57, crashed to $5 by 2023 (down 91%). Company burned ~$1B/quarter.
