The Dead Girlfriend Who Never Existed

On January 16, 2013—days before the BCS National Championship—Deadspin revealed Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o’s inspirational story about playing through his grandmother’s and girlfriend’s deaths was partially fabricated: the girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, never existed. Te’o had been catfished for years in an elaborate online hoax, creating college football’s most bizarre scandal and introducing mainstream audiences to “catfishing.”

The Inspirational Narrative

Manti Te’o’s 2012 Heisman campaign centered on tragedy. In September 2012, his grandmother died. Hours later, allegedly, his girlfriend Lennay Kekua died of leukemia. Te’o played the next game (Michigan State) with extraordinary emotion, Notre Dame won, and the story went viral.

Media portrayed Te’o as warrior playing through unbearable grief. He was runner-up for Heisman Trophy. Notre Dame reached BCS Championship. The girlfriend story was central to his legend—they’d met after a game, conducted long-distance relationship, and she died young from illness.

The Deadspin Exposé

Deadspin journalists investigated and found Lennay Kekua never existed:

  • No death certificate
  • No social media presence beyond one account
  • Photos were stolen from random woman (Diane O’Meara)
  • Te’o never met her in person despite years of “relationship”
  • Entire relationship was online/phone-based

The hoax was perpetrated by Ronaiah “Naya” Tuiasosopo, who created the Lennay persona and catfished Te’o for years. Tuiasosopo later came out as transgender, adding complexity to the situation.

Te’o’s Defense & Questions

Te’o claimed he was victim of elaborate catfish—he believed Lennay was real until December 2012 when she “admitted” to faking her death (he didn’t go public until Deadspin forced it). Notre Dame backed his victimhood narrative.

Questions remained: How could he not know? Why didn’t he verify existence of long-term girlfriend? Was he complicit in fabricating story for publicity? Te’o’s story had inconsistencies (claiming to have met her when he hadn’t).

The scandal broke days before Notre Dame’s national championship game against Alabama (which they lost 42-14). Te’o played terribly, overshadowed by the controversy.

The NFL Draft Impact

Pre-scandal, Te’o was projected top-10 pick. Post-catfish, he fell to #38 (San Diego Chargers, second round). The scandal cost him millions in draft position. Teams questioned his judgment, intelligence, and honesty.

His NFL career was unremarkable (8 seasons, backup quality), far below Heisman finalist expectations. The catfish scandal permanently defined him.

The Cultural Impact

The scandal introduced “catfishing” to mainstream consciousness. MTV’s Catfish TV show gained popularity. Online dating skepticism increased. “Manti Te’o” became shorthand for being fooled by online persona.

The 2022 Netflix documentary “Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist” explored the scandal with sympathy for both Te’o and Tuiasosopo, revealing the complexity beyond initial mockery.

Whether victim or complicit, Te’o’s legacy became the fake dead girlfriend rather than his on-field accomplishments.
