Language learning app using spaced repetition, mnemonics, and video of native speakers. Founded 2010 by Ed Cooke (memory champion), Greg Detre (neuroscientist), Ben Whately. Competes with Duolingo but emphasizes memory techniques and authentic content.
Memory Science Foundation
Based on spaced repetition research and mnemonic techniques. “Mems” (memory aids): visual/verbal associations to remember words. Community-created mems help learners anchor vocabulary. Ed Cooke’s memory competition background influenced design.
Course Structure
Official courses for 20+ languages: Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, etc. Video clips of native speakers using words in context (post-2016 redesign). Pronunciation practice, listening comprehension. Free tier + Memrise Pro ($8.99/month or $59.99/year).
Community Courses
Originally allowed user-generated courses for any subject (medical terms, history facts, GRE vocab). Thousands of community courses. 2018 split: official language courses in main app, community courses moved to “Decks by Memrise” (later shut down in 2020). Angered power users.
Gamification
Points, leaderboards, streaks. Compete with friends and global users. “Speed Review” mode for quick daily practice. Less cartoon-ish than Duolingo’s owl mascot, more sophisticated UI.
Native Speaker Videos
Differentiator: short clips of locals using words/phrases in real contexts. Helps with pronunciation, cultural nuance. Filmed in countries (Mexico, Japan, France, etc.). Accent variety (e.g., Mexican vs. Spanish Spanish).
Duolingo Comparison
Memrise: Deeper focus on memory techniques, native speaker content, vocabulary-heavy. Duolingo: Gamified lessons, grammar explanations, broader skill practice, larger user base. Some learners use both: Duolingo for structure, Memrise for vocabulary depth.
Criticisms
2018 community course removal alienated loyal users. Pro subscription required for offline mode, multiple learner modes. Some find mems cheesy or unhelpful. Spaced repetition algorithm less customizable than Anki.
