Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s September 2015 release delivered stealth-action perfection while becoming infamous for its incomplete story and Hideo Kojima’s messy divorce from Konami.
Gameplay Excellence
MGSV’s open-world Afghanistan/Africa offered unprecedented tactical freedom. Every mission had dozens of approaches - sneak, snipe, extract, air support, or absurd creativity (Fulton-extracting goats). The FOX Engine produced stunning visuals. Mechanically, it was near-perfect stealth gaming.
Narrative Issues
Chapter 2 felt unfinished, with repeated missions and an abrupt ending. A Collector’s Edition bonus disc revealed cut content (Mission 51, conclusive ending). The story’s nuclear disarmament online meta-game never worked as intended. The game was clearly incomplete despite shipping as a full-price title.
Konami-Kojima Split
During development, reports emerged of Kojima’s removal from Konami. His name was removed from marketing materials. After release, Kojima departed, taking talents to independent Death Stranding. Konami pivoted to mobile gaming and pachinko, effectively ending AAA console development.
The hashtag represents the tragedy of brilliant artistry compromised by corporate dysfunction, and gaming’s most prominent auteur director escaping publisher control.
