Mortal Kombat 1, released September 19, 2023, rebooted the franchise again, following 2011’s Mortal Kombat and 2019’s MK11. The game introduced Kameo Fighters—assist characters adding depth to combat—and reset the timeline (again).
New Era
After Fire God Liu Kang created a new timeline in MK11’s ending, MK1 reimagined characters’ origins. Scorpion and Sub-Zero were allies. Mileena was Kitana’s sister, not clone. The story mode mixed nostalgia with fresh takes.
Gameplay Evolution
Kameo Fighters (60+ assist characters from MK history) provided extra moves, combos, and defensive options. The system added complexity without overwhelming newcomers. Fatalities remained gloriously over-the-top.
The game sold well but faced criticism for aggressive monetization (skins, battle passes) and online issues at launch. Still, NetherRealm’s fighting game dominance continued—MK1 and Injustice proved superhero games weren’t their only strength.
