NetGalley

NetGalley (founded 2010) democratized advance reader copy (ARC) access by digitizing the process—publishers upload pre-publication ebooks, readers request copies, post reviews on Goodreads/Amazon/blogs.

How It Works

Readers create profiles showcasing platforms (blogs, Goodreads, Instagram), follower counts, and review history. Publishers approve requests based on reach/engagement. “Auto-approval” for established reviewers. Books download with DRM expiration dates (usually publication day).

Influencer Access

NetGalley bridged gap between professional reviewers (guaranteed ARCs) and average readers (none). Bookstagrammers with 1K+ followers gained access to hundreds of upcoming titles. Publishers tracked metrics: request-to-review ratios, star ratings, platform reach.

Criticism

Some readers treated NetGalley as free book service, requesting 50+ titles monthly without reviewing. Publishers questioned ROI—did NetGalley reviews drive sales? Established authors’ books had 5,000+ requests, new authors struggled for attention, mirroring publishing’s inequality.
