The Oklahoma City Thunder (2012-2016) featured one of basketball’s most dynamic duos in Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, reaching the 2012 NBA Finals at just 23 and 23 years old respectively.
The 2012 Finals Run
After years of development, the Thunder reached the 2012 NBA Finals, defeating the Spurs and Lakers before losing to Miami’s Big Three 4-1. Durant averaged 30.6 PPG in the Finals, showcasing his elite scoring. James Harden (then sixth man) was traded to Houston months later in a cost-cutting move that haunted the franchise.
Peak Years
From 2012-2016, the Thunder won 60% of their games despite constant injury setbacks. Durant won MVP in 2014, while Westbrook’s explosive athleticism made them the league’s most exciting backcourt.
The 2016 playoffs saw OKC lead Golden State 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals before collapsing in three straight losses — one of basketball’s most painful blown series.
The Breakup
Durant’s departure to Golden State in July 2016 shocked the basketball world. Westbrook stayed, winning MVP in 2017 while averaging a triple-double (41 per season). The “what if” of KD and Russ staying together remains one of the NBA’s greatest unanswered questions.
