The Composition That Killed Overwatch Esports

From August 2018 to August 2019, Overwatch competitive play was dominated by “GOATS” (three tanks, three supports, zero damage dealers), a composition so oppressive it made Overwatch League nearly unwatchable. The meta, enabled by hero Brigitte’s overpowered abilities, persisted through dozens of balance patches before Blizzard implemented mandatory role lock—fundamentally changing Overwatch’s design philosophy.

What Was GOATS?

GOATS (named after the team that popularized it) ran:

  • Tanks: Reinhardt, D.Va, Zarya
  • Supports: Brigitte, Lucio, Zenyatta or Moira

The composition had no traditional damage dealers (DPS heroes). Brigitte’s armor packs, healing, and crowd control made the deathball composition nearly unkillable. Teams would slowly push together in a giant ball, grinding down opponents through sustain rather than picks.

The meta was technically skillful at high levels but visually boring—watching six tanks and supports slowly walk at each other for minutes was terrible spectator entertainment.

The Brigitte Problem

Brigitte, added to Overwatch in March 2018, was designed to counter dive compositions (Winston/D.Va/Tracer/Genji). Her kit included:

  • Shield bash stun (could stop charging Reinhardt)
  • Armor packs (stacking damage reduction)
  • Self-healing and cleave damage
  • Rally ultimate (permanent armor)

She was so overtuned that building around her became mandatory. Teams that didn’t run GOATS lost to teams that did. DPS players in Overwatch League were benched for months, forced to learn Brigitte instead.

The Year-Long Nightmare

From August 2018 through mid-2019, Blizzard attempted to nerf GOATS through balance patches:

  • Brigitte nerfed 10+ times
  • Other heroes adjusted to counter GOATS
  • New hero Ashe added specifically to challenge the meta

Nothing worked. GOATS remained dominant. Overwatch League Season 2 (February-August 2019) was 80%+ GOATS compositions. Viewership declined as casual fans tuned out the stale meta. Highlights were non-existent—you can’t make flashy plays with tank sustain warfare.

The Nuclear Option: Role Lock

On July 23, 2019, Blizzard announced 2-2-2 role lock: all compositions must have exactly two tanks, two supports, two damage. GOATS (3-3-0) became impossible. The change was controversial—it limited Overwatch’s flexibility, the game’s selling point—but was deemed necessary to save competitive integrity.

Role lock worked. GOATS died instantly. DPS players returned to rosters. The game became watchable again. But the damage was done—Overwatch League had lost momentum, and the year of GOATS contributed to the franchise’s 2020-2023 struggles.

The Legacy

GOATS became shorthand for:

  • Metas so dominant they warp entire games
  • Spectator-unfriendly competitive scenes
  • Developer hesitancy to make drastic changes
  • The tension between game design flexibility and competitive health

Blizzard’s lesson: sometimes you need to fundamentally change design to fix broken metas, not just number tweaks.
